THEN
The History
A fighting style made famous by
street gangs, hustlers and old
number runners.
Every borough
had their warriors.
"The 52 we used on the guys and gangs that used chains and knives. We would go out
there with our bare hands, without any weapons and knock them out. This is how
we got known for the 52, but everybody couldn´t learn the 52, because you had to
really be in the ghetto to know what time it is. You had to be where all the trouble
was at, at the time."
Brother Ali
NOW
The New Culture
In prison this style would take on
another meaning, and would
transform into a
full fledged beast
when
it returned to the streets.
"The streets were run by the strong, as were the prison yards. 52 would become a tool for
bartering. Our Funk is the code that 52 can unlock because 52 allow you to freak the flow.
Even in Hell the Devil plays the blues, he like his rhythm too.
Prison is not about jokes, and humility, it´s about me and mine and
standing strong. For the weak fade quickly under the pressure of defending
themselves everyday. Thus the art is reborn in it´s new environment
and matures like any child in accord with its surrounding. 52 would
become a tool for bartering."
Daniel Marks
"I don’t glorify where we have been, but the thing is this, brother: we have some of the most brilliant minds in prisons, behind walls. We can do anything that we set our mind to. We had to learn. Prison for us—especially Rikers Island C-74—was our gladiator school. We had to learn and hone our craft on the island. It’s for survival and it’s very real."
"This is a beautiful thing, Constellation. What we’re doing is we’re going to serve the community in a way that’s uplifting to the community. It’s helping young men become strong men. It’s enhancing their honor. It’s making them masterpieces of men. What we’re doing is something that should’ve been done with us. We’re showing these youngsters, men, women, little girls, little boys, that we’re not afraid of them. We love them. That’s what they need. They need love. They need nurturing. They need protection."

Occupation: Boxing and Fitness trainer
Co-Founder of Constellation
Kawaun is an urban icon whose exploits were documented in a book titled “Street Kingdoms Five years inside Franklyn Avenue Posse” written by Doug Century. Kawaun, a former Professional Boxing began his knowledge of 52 Blocks at the tender ageof 10. 52 Blocks is an urban form of boxing that dates back to the late 1700’s in the era of bare knuckle Prize fighting. Growing up in Brooklyn during the 1970’s was quite a task, as young men found themselves fending off gang recruitment tactic. Kawaun was no stranger to trouble, as events in his life would lead to a stint in Prison. While serving time Kawaun was approached for an article written for Details Magazine by Douglas Century on the topic of 52 Blocks “Ghetto Busters”. This newfound interest in the exploits of young Brooklynites would gain Kawaun international attention on Internet forums and discussion groups abroad. Thought to be just a myth or urban legend Kawaun’s life story would play out in theories until he met Daniel Marks in 2004. During the next few years before the release of the documentary “Break The Glass” on 52 Hand Blocks in 2007, Kawaun would lend his knowledge and professional insight as a valued community resource in accurately tracing connections between the North Americans fighting styles and its South American and Caribbean cousins art forms from the Diaspora. Kawaun continues to research and train in the fighting style that urban practitioners call 52 Blocks as a member of Constellation Global group.

Occupation: Technology Analyst
Co-Founder of Constellation
Daniel is a Martial Art Scholar that began his studies at the age of 8 years old, learning how to Box from his Uncle who was a Golden Gloves Champion. Daniel’s interest in Diaspora Martial Combative began in the year 1987, when Daniel and a friend began an African Studies program based on Martial Arts. It was at this time that Daniel realized the vast amount of documented and undocumented reports of African Combative surviving throughout the West i.e. Caribbean, South and North America. Daniel’s research would lead him on a journey that would amass some 24 years allowing Daniel and other Co-Founders of Constellation to come to terms with the first Documentary on the lost fighting style that fused with Boxing over the last 250 years called “Break The Glass”. The “Break The Glass”documentary was ground breaking as it unlocked information about urban legends that had never been mentioned outside of their respected community, men whose names had been forgotten now had a voice through the efforts of the Constellation Media Group. Daniel continues to research and train in this fighting style that urban practitioners call 52 Blocks as a member of Constellation Global group.
